Las Vegas (Spring 2024)
Absinthe & Pier 17 Yacht Club
Finally made it to an Absinthe show in Vegas. People rave about it so I decided it was time to check it out.
It is like a mini-Cirque du Soleil show with several sets of acrobat performers throughout the show. The small setting in the tent is a lot more intimate than the arena feel of some of the Cirque shows.
I think people are drawn by the adult raunchy themes of the show which makes it entertaining.
In front of the tent is the Fairy Green area where they serve drinks and burgers. Off to the side is a kind of speakeasy called the Pier 17 Yacht Club that serves up specialty cocktails.
You actually don’t have to go to the show to hit up the bars and the food in this area.
Peter Luger
I have never gotten around to going to the Peter Luger in NYC but now have at least found my way the one they opened last year in Vegas.
Everything is as you would expect. Old school classy service and heavy steakhouse fare. We ordered too much food. I wanted to try the thick bacon and the seafood tower, but by the time the steak arrived with the German potatoes, I had to cram it down my already full stomach. No room for dessert of course but they give you these big chocolate coins at the end of the meal.
Pho 90
This is a great unassuming no frills pho shop in the Chinatown area. The pho and bun bowls are shown above. Perfect dishes after a night of Vegas drinking.
Fountainbleu & Miami Slice
We took an opportunity to check out the latest fancy casino in Las Vegas. The location is not great in that you have to walk a long block north of the Encore to get to it by the convention center.
The inside is very swanky though. Check out the sofa in the above photos made out of nickels.
The Miami Slice pizza place is excellent in the food court. The slice shown is the the pepperoni drizzled with spicy honey.
Stray Pirate
I’m not a huge tiki bar fan as the drinks tend to be too fruity and sugary. This is a new place in the Arts District area. They did a nice job with the decor although it took the eyes some adjusting to the darkness when you come in from the daylight.
Lake Mead National Recreational Area
We didn’t originally set out to visit this place but since we had the annual national parks pass, it was free to enter and check out. We originally tried to find the bighorn sheep that hang out in a park on the outskirts of Vegas but they were in the hills in the spring time. So instead we took a drive out to enjoy the scenery at Lake Mead.
